Unveiling Symptoms of Varicose Veins Along with Causes and Treatment

Varicose veins are a common vascular condition that affects 40% of women and 25% of men, often causing discomfort, cosmetic concerns, and other health problems. Understanding the causes and recognizing common symptoms of varicose veins is crucial for timely intervention and effective treatment. In this blog, we’ll delve into the world of varicose veins, shedding light on their origins and the signs you should be aware of.

Common Causes and Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins develop when the valves in your veins malfunction, leading to blood pooling and the veins becoming enlarged and twisted. While there isn’t a single cause for varicose veins, certain factors contribute to their development. Hereditary factors play a significant role, as a family history of venous issues increases the likelihood of developing varicose veins. Additionally, age, gender, obesity, and prolonged periods of standing or sitting can elevate the risk.

Some of the most common signs include:

  1. Visible, bulging veins: The hallmark of varicose veins is the appearance of twisted, enlarged veins beneath the surface of the skin. These veins are often blue or purple in color.
  2. Aching or pain: Individuals with varicose veins may experience aching or pain in the affected area, especially after long periods of standing or sitting.
  3. Swelling and discomfort: Swelling in the legs and ankles can occur due to the impaired blood flow caused by varicose veins, leading to discomfort and heaviness.
  4. Itching and skin changes: The skin over varicose veins may become itchy and discolored. In some cases, individuals may develop dry, thin skin over the affected veins.

Varicose Vein Treatment

Preventative measures such as controlling weight, utilizing compression socks, and maintaining a healthy level of activity can help stave off unsightly veins, but once varicose veins appear, it’s unlikely they will go away without medical intervention.

At NG Vascular, we offer these FDA-approved treatments to eliminate varicose veins:

  1. Radiofrequency ablation: a fast, minimally invasive procedure to close the affected vein(s). It uses radiofrequency energy to seal the vein, which will shrink and disappear over time. Blood is re-routed by the body through other, healthier veins. This outpatient procedure offers far less risk of complications than conventional surgery. You can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.
  2. VenaSealâ„¢: a state-of-the-art treatment that uses a special adhesive to seal the vein. Unlike thermal-based procedures, VenaSeal protects against the possibility of nerve injury or skin burns. As with radiofrequency ablation, you can resume normal activities immediately.

These procedures are often covered by most insurance plans and Medicare. Delaying treatment can also lead to more serious complications, including inflammation, blood clots, skin ulcers, bleeding and deep vein thrombosis.

NG Vascular & Vein Center performs varicose vein procedures in an outpatient setting. We have three locations in Munster, Indiana; Merrillville, Indiana; and Palos Heights, Illinois. Call any of our locations to schedule a FREE consultation.
