Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS)

Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS) Treatment

Pelvic Congestion Syndrome, or PCS, occurs when varicose veins form in a woman’s hip region. Pregnancy is most often the cause of PCS, as the structural changes that occur during pregnancy and the strain that additional fluid can put on veins can result in the development of varicose veins.

Dull, chronic pain is the most common symptom of PCS and often worsens after standing for long periods of time, before menstruation, during and after sexual intercourse and late in pregnancy. Some women may also experience painful menstruation, back and hip pain, abdomen tenderness and swelling of the vulva or vagina.

The more pregnancies a woman has had, the greater her risk for developing pelvic congestion syndrome.

Ovarian vein embolization is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure to treat PCS and is an alternative to invasive surgery, such as a hysterectomy.
