Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG)

PEG is a minimally invasive approach to place a feeding tube within the body. This allows the patient to receive nutrition through the stomach. It is typically recommended for those who have difficulty swallowing or cannot get all the nutrition required by mouth.

Also called a “G-tube,” PEG is used for enteral nutrition. This means that liquid nutrition is delivered through a flexible tube directly into the stomach or small intestine.

PEG Tube

Prior to the procedure, you will receive twilight sedation and a local anesthetic where the tube will be placed. In some cases, you will be given an antibiotic to prevent infection. The doctor will then make a small incision and place the tube into the incision, connecting it to the stomach or small intestine. The procedure takes less than an hour, and you can return home the same day.

Some patients experience pain, which will usually decrease within the next day or two. You will be given instructions on how to care for your PEG.
