Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition caused by repetitive use of the arm, wrist, or hand. Although commonly associated with racket sports, tennis elbow affects a wide range of people—including tradespeople, office workers, musicians, and active adults—whose daily activities place strain on the elbow joint. At NG Vascular & Vein Center, we evaluate and treat tennis elbow at our locations in Munster, IN; Merrillville, IN; Homewood, IL; Palos Heights, IL; and Addison, IL, offering both traditional care guidance and advanced minimally invasive treatment options.

What Causes Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow develops when the tendons connecting the forearm muscles to the outer elbow are repeatedly stressed. Over time, this leads to microscopic tendon damage, inflammation, and pain. Risk factors include:

  • Repetitive gripping or lifting motions
  • Sports involving repetitive arm movement
  • Occupations requiring frequent wrist or arm use
  • Poor ergonomics or improper technique
  • Age (most common between 30–50)

Initial Treatment Options

Conservative treatment is the first recommended step for treating tennis elbow and may include medication, resting or icing the arm, or exercise. The repetitive motions that led to the condition should be discontinued until it heals. If the pain persists, physical therapy or pain injections may be recommended.

When Conservative Care Isn’t Enough

For patients with persistent pain, surgery has traditionally been the next step. Surgical options include open tendon repair or arthroscopic procedures. While effective for some, surgery involves longer recovery times and time away from work or activities.
