Spider Veins
Unlike varicose veins that rise above the surface of the skin, spider veins are smaller, surface level and sometimes red, blue or purple in color. They can appear on the legs, face or other parts of the body. While they are usually harmless, they can sometimes cause mild symptoms such as itching or burning. They may also be a cosmetic concern. In some cases, they are a sign of an underlying condition, such as venous disease.
Like varicose veins, spider veins are caused by venous insufficiency, a condition where valves in the veins become faulty and allow blood to “pool” in the veins. They can be the result of genetics (family history), hormonal changes, sun exposure, weight gain or prolonged standing or sitting.
